EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT ACCENT AND DIALECT STRUCTURES ON HUMAN RELATIONS

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to understand the effects of different accent and dialect structures on human relationship. There is no difference between the responses of the male and female participants in the survey. It was observed that the participants preferred their teachers to use Istanbul Turkish, which is the commonly agreed proper accent. In the study, it was found that about half of the participants found different dialect and accent structures funny.

INSTRUMENT

In this survey, researchers used 12 questions. Definitions of accents and dialects were given importance. Therefore, researchers wanted participants to solve the questionnaire by knowing this difference. These definitions are given at the beginning of the survey. Due to cultural sensitivity, some questions are not included. (For example: I am disturbed by the fact that a Kurdish person speaks Turkish with a different dialect.)

SAMPLE

A total of 100 people, 64 women and 36 men, participated in the survey. Age ranges of participants are minimum 18 maximum 24. The average age of the participants was 20,64.

DATA COLLECTION

In order to reach people faster and save paper, data was collected by online.

For this question, the importance that participants give to use Istanbul Turkish in human relations is measured. 12% of the participants do not care to use Istanbul Turkish in human relations. Also, there is no a big difference between the genders in the given answers to the question.

For this question, the level of discomfort that the participants felt when they heard different dialect and accent structures outside Istanbul Turkish was measured. 75% of the participants do not feel uncomfortable when they hear the different dialect and accent outside Istanbul Turkish.

For this question,funny finding levels of different dialect and accent structures outside of Istanbul Turkish of the participants were measured. 54% of the participants do not find funny the different dialect and accent structures outside of Istanbul Turkish. 26% of the participants partly find funny, and 20% of the participants definitely find funny.

For this question, the extent to which the participants wanted to use Istanbul Turkish from their teachers was measured. 84% of the participants want the teachers to use Istanbul Turkish.

For this question, the level of communication of the participants with someone they do not know with different dialect and accent structure was measured. 95% of the participants do not hesitate to communicate with a person they do not know who using different dialect and accent structure.

For this question, level of participants’ feeling trust to someone who using different dialect and accent structure was measured. In the question, it was stated that the person using different dialect and mouth structure was the home/dorm-mates of the participants. Thus, it was also measured whether the confodence level of the participants was affected by the degree of closeness. 62% of participants do not care that their home/dorm friends are the same as their dialect and accent structure.

It has been measured whether having the same dialect and accent structure as this question enhances the friendship relationship. 53% of the participants do not think that having the same dialect and accent structure will strengthen friendship relationship.

For this question, importance of dialect and accent structure to adapt a environment was measured. Participants were asked whether they would imitate it if in the environment which speaking with different dialect and accent structures. 26% of the participants try to imitate the spoken dialect structure to keep up with the different dialect and accent structure.

For this question, the extent to which participants used their own dialect and accent structures when they get angry in human relations was measured. 63% of respondents react to their mouth and accent structures when they get angry.

For this question, levels of to find funny to different dialect and accent structures of the participants were measured. 63% of participants feel uncomfortable when different dialect and accent structures are finding funny.

CONCLUSION

There is no difference between the responses of the male and female participants in the survey.    

In this survey while 63% of the attendants are disturbed by the fact that different dialects and accent structures are found funny, 46% of them find those obtaining accent and dialects which are different from Istanbul Turkish funny. The participants do not change their attitudes even if they are disturbed.

The majority of the participants prefer teachers to use Istanbul Turkish in the lessons.

53% of participants do not think that having the same dialect and accents structure will strengthen friendship communication. From this point of view, the different accent and dialect structure in friendship relations is not thought to strengthen communication.

62% of the participants do not think that having the same dialect and accent structure as their home/dorm friends is an important detail. Many of the participants think that the same accent and dialect structure is not necessary to live in the same environment. In short, this study showed that different accent and dialect structures have different effects on human relationships.

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The small number of participants is the biggest limitation of this study. The limited number of questions and the lack of variety of questions is a limitation of this study.

SUGGESTIONS

In line with this study, teachers are advised to use Istanbul Turkish in lessons. Teachers with different dialect and accent structures can also be given a course by the state to develop Istanbul Turkish. In the social media, the offensive jokes on this issue should be prevented by those concerned. In the future, it is recommended that people who will carry out this study further elaborate the questionnaire. Increasing the number of opposing questions within the survey will make the results more reliable. Applying the survey to more people will make the results more reliable.
