P<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">robably \u00a0of Carthaginian origin, even if some historians suggest he could have been originally from Numidia, North-East Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">After the First Punic War, Sardinia became a Roman province:it still had a vast population of Carthaginians along the coasts and Sardinian Iliensi on the mountains. While not tolerating each others, they hated even more the new invaders. Consequently, t<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">he sudden invasion brought chaos among the Romans. And\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">the several defeats that the African general inflicted to the consuls of Rome brought<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0even more lack of order.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Many of whom, previously submitted by the Romans, started to rebel and help the Carthaginians. Certainly,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Hampsicora wasn\u2019t different: he saw the opportunity to free his island and he seized it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Hampsicora starts his war<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The Casus Belli (Latin locution for &#8220;reason of war&#8221;) was the lack of support from the Romans to the Sardinians.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Being the most important Magistrate of Carrus, an influent settlement situated along the Western coast of the Island, Hampsicora declared war to Rome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In the year 215 B.C., he asked\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Chartago<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">for help and tried to mobilize the <i>Iliensi.\u00a0<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The <i>Iliensi <\/i>were an ancient population that has lived in Sardinia for centuries (if not for millennia!). According to \u00a0legends, they were descendants of Iolaus, Heracle\u2019s companion in Greek mythology.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">They were very wild and dangerous for other populations, but they had trade relationships for centuries with the Carthaginians.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Hiostus\u2019 defeat <\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Surely, luck didn\u2019t help for sure the poor Hampsicora: the Chartaginian fleet was scattered towards the Iberic peninsula by strong winds and storms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">While the Magister went on the mountains to get the alliance with the Iliensi, his son Hiostus saw the chance to destroy the Roman army. The latter\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">was quickly setted up by Titus Manlius Torquatus in Karalis. Thus, Hiostus<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0decided to battle without the reinforcements. As a result, it<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0was a disaster, with a vast majority of Hiostus\u2019 forces fallen or captured, and the young commander ran away.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The battle of Decimomannu<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12752\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12752\" style=\"width: 571px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12752 size-large lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mozartcultures.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Sardinia_215_aC_-_Ampsicora_rivolta-571x1024.png\" alt=\"Amsicora\u2019s rebellion of year 215 B.C. They were under the guide of Asdrubal Barca the Bald and Magon Barca, Hannibal\u2019s brother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Meanwhile, Hampsicora succeded by forming an alliance with the Iliensi and joined forces with the North-Africans.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">At this point, the new army started marching to the South, where Manlius Torquatus was waiting for them.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Manlius was forced to leave Karalis to protect his allies and caught the rebellious in proximity of Decimomannu, where a large battle occurred.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The Sardinians and the Carhaginians were defeated. Their generals took prisoners and brought them to Rome. This was the end of Hampsicora\u2019s rebellion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">At the end, Hampsicora himself was able to escape from the battle and hide in the Inland, with the few survivors of his army.
