His life was very short and unstable, but very productive artistically. From an upper middle family, his mother was one of his greatest influences. She was a highly regarded graphic designer. This allowed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basquiat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from a very young age, to surround himself with art and have opportunities in the artistic field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He entered a school for gifted boys, but due to rebellious behavior, he was expelled before graduating. After this and by choice, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basquiat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lived on the streets for two years. Sometimes he lived in abandoned buildings, others in his girlfriend\u2019s homes. He started in the drugs and street gangs world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1977, he met the art of <\/span><b>graffiti<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, together with his friend <em>Al D\u00edaz<\/em>. He painted <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poetic <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phrases. He signed them as <\/span><b>SAMO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, short for &#8220;<\/span><b>SAM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e <\/span><b>O<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ld Shit&#8221;. He drew these phrases in the Soho neighborhood of <\/span><b>NY<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, near art galleries. Its purpose was to be noticed, to advertise in the artistic world. He also made a brief foray into the musical world, with an experimental music group called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gray<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Andy Warhol<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basquiat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used to paint T-shirts and postcards which he later sold. One day he went to a restaurant to sell one of his postcards and offered it to one of the local customers, Andy Warhol. <\/span><b>Warhol<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who was already famous, became interested in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basquiat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is said that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basquiat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">looked for this type of approach with celebrities since his intention was to jump to fame, and this was his advertising tool. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warhol <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organized a lunch with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basquiat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was full of controversy. They had very complex personalities, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basquiat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was impulsive and energetic, while <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warhol <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">returned to a creative rebirth. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warhol <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was the catapult for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basquiat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to establish himself as a famous artist. They painted about 200 paintings together. One of the closest friends of both <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paige Powell<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describes Basquiat and Warhol&#8217;s relationship as <\/span><b>symbiotic <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and far away from romantic. Symbiotic because they fed on each other. The family environment facilitated education and presence in the artistic world. <i>Basquiat <\/i>liked music, books, and <b>pop culture<\/b>. <i>Basquiat <\/i>began to make poetic phrases that he signed as <b>SAMO<\/b>, in the Soho neighborhood of <b>NY<\/b>. He also painted T-shirts and postcards which he later sold to support himself.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This first stage of his artwork took place between 1980 and 1982. However, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basquiat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always clarified that he painted, he did not do <\/span><b>graffiti<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Basquiat&#8217;s work is in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neo-Expressionist style<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 1982 and 1985, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basquiat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">began to develop more complex artworks. His paintings were beginning to take better shape. He experimented with forms from some ancient cultures, such as the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">African<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aztec<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and even the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greco-Roman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By this time, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basquiat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had already achieved fame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riding with Death. Jean-Michel Basquiat. 1988. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neo-expressionism.<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the critics made to Basquiat&#8217;s art, was his speed in painting since his artworks seemed unfinished. However, he defended himself by saying that each line was where it was supposed to be. That its speed had nothing to do with the quality of the frame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His death happens suddenly from a heroin overdose. Like any controversial artist, his work has many retractors and others that praise it as magnificent, but a work by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basquiat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can never go unnoticed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basquiat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">achieved what many artists never do, outstanding <\/span><b>fame<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His artworks are sold for millions of dollars. In 2017 one of his artworks reached 110.5 million dollars.
