Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/i><\/strong> was a famous Spanish artist. He is recognized mainly for his paintings, however, he also worked as a writer, graphic designer, set designer, model among other activities. <\/span>Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/span><\/i> was one of the best-known surrealist artists of the 20th century.<\/span><\/p>\n

His eccentric personality earned him the criticism of many. He was a provocateur, an egocentric, a narcissist. He once said: <\/span>“The only difference between a madman and Dal\u00ed is that Dal\u00ed is not mad.”<\/span><\/i> Dal\u00ed’s life was long and very productive. He made more than 1500 paintings. <\/span>Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/span><\/i> reached his goal of being a millionaire and famous.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Character<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/span><\/i> created himself as a character. He sculpted his own life, to be <\/span>seen<\/span> as an eccentric artist, a <\/span>genius<\/b>. However, some people affirm that the character <\/span>\u00a8Salvador Dali\u00a8<\/span><\/i> was created by <\/span>Gala<\/span><\/i>, his wife. <\/span>Dal\u00ed <\/span><\/i>from a very young age showed a clear ambition to go down in history as a <\/span>genius<\/b>, as the best of Spanish artists. He claimed he was a <\/span>genius<\/b>. In one of his last interviews, he said: <\/span>“Geniuses must not die.”<\/span><\/i> Of course, he was referring to himself. Some people that knew <\/span>Dal\u00ed<\/span><\/i>, said that his character only appeared when there were public around, in his solitude he was calm and silent.<\/span><\/p>\n

His unique <\/span>style <\/b>was also part of the <\/span>character<\/b>. His characteristic <\/span>mustache <\/b>was inspired by the style of <\/span>Diego Velazquez<\/span><\/i>, one of the best Spanish painters in history. <\/span>Dali <\/span><\/i>had great admiration for <\/span>Velazquez<\/span><\/i>. Dali’s <\/span>mustache <\/b>received special care to keep its shape. <\/span>Dal\u00ed <\/span><\/i>used to apply date oil and honey to it. That is why many times <\/span>flies <\/b>were close to the artist.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gala<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Dal\u00ed\u00b4s artwork was usually signed as <\/span>Gala Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/b>. <\/span>Gala <\/span><\/i>was the center of everything he created. In the summer of 1929, he met <\/span>Gala <\/span><\/i>in Dal\u00ed’s hometown, <\/span>Cadaqu\u00e9s<\/b>. <\/span>Gala <\/span><\/i>was Russian, her real name was <\/span>Elena Ivanovna Diakonova<\/span><\/i>. Married to the French poet <\/span>Paul \u00c9luard<\/span><\/i>. She decides to separate and abandon her daughter <\/span>C\u00e9cile<\/span><\/i>, to join <\/span>Dal\u00ed<\/span><\/i>. A new artistic stage would begin for the <\/span>surrealist artist<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gala <\/span><\/i>was 10 years older than <\/span>Dali<\/span><\/i>, he felt an instant attraction to her. <\/span>Dal\u00ed <\/span><\/i>would only have eyes for her, distancing even from very close friends, such as the filmmaker <\/span>Luis Bu\u00f1uel<\/span><\/i>, with whom he had made the film \u00a8<\/span>Un Perro andaluz<\/span><\/i>\u00a8. According to some close friends, <\/span>Dal\u00ed <\/span><\/i>depended on <\/span>Gala <\/span><\/i>as if she were his mother, and she cared for him like a son.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Parts of Dal\u00ed’s works were conceived by <\/span>Gala<\/span><\/i>, which is why he signed them as <\/span>Gala Salvador Dal\u00ed.<\/b> Gala <\/span><\/i>read to him, helped him create, even told him what to paint and what not to paint. <\/span>Gala <\/span><\/i>was much more than his <\/span>muse<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Collaborations<\/strong><\/h2>\n

During World War II he took refuge in the United States. During this period, Salvador Dal\u00ed collaborated with Albert Hitchcock on the film \u00a8Spellbound\u00a8. He would also work on a short film with Walt Disney, however, decades later \u00a8Destino\u00a8 was finished. Dal\u00ed was a fan of Disney. <\/span>Dal\u00ed <\/span><\/i>also considered <\/span>Disney <\/span><\/i>a <\/span>surrealist artist.<\/b><\/p>\n

Dal\u00ed’s<\/span><\/i> North American stage was very productive. <\/span>Gala <\/span><\/i>was in charge of searching galleries and negotiating the art. <\/span>Dal\u00ed <\/span><\/i>was earning more money and fame every day.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Spain, he developed the logo for <\/span>Chupa Chups<\/i><\/b>, the famous Spanish <\/span>lollipop <\/b>brand. <\/span>Pop <\/b>icon from its creation to the present.<\/span><\/p>\n

Franco’s Spain<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In 1948 <\/span>Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/span><\/i> decided to return to <\/span>Spain<\/b>. By then <\/span>Francisco Franco <\/span><\/i>was in power. <\/span>Franco <\/span><\/i>was a nationalist military dictator. <\/span>Dal\u00ed <\/span><\/i>made several artworks for the <\/span>dictator<\/b>, including a painting of the dictator’s granddaughter. He also appeared on television with <\/span>Franco<\/span><\/i>. This was highly criticized by the artistic environment, especially the Spanish one.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dal\u00ed’s <\/span><\/i>opposition to <\/span>Pablo Picasso<\/span><\/i> increased during this period due to politics. <\/span>Dal\u00ed <\/span><\/i>went so far as to say: <\/span>“Picasso is a genius. Me too. Picasso is a communist. Me neith<\/span><\/i>er.”<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Dal\u00ed’s signature<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Dal\u00ed <\/span><\/i>used to sign blank papers. He did it even when he was interviewed, or when he was in a documentary. It was a strange habit that brought him a reputation that his work was not entirely his. Some of the painters who worked on it gave interviews. <\/span>Manuel Pujol Balades<\/span><\/i> was one of those painters. He said that <\/span>Dal\u00ed <\/span><\/i>gave him instructions and went on to revise or modify the artwork and who paid him was <\/span>Gala<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dali once said:\u00a0 <\/span>“Modesty is not my specialty. Dal\u00ed is only good because other painters are very bad.”<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
