He lived between 1834 and 1917.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was born into a wealthy family, his mother American and his father a French banker. The last name <\/span><b><i>\u00a8Degas\u00a8<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was written <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De Gas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but later to simplify it would become \u00a8<\/span><b>Degas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a8. Edgar Degas was a loner, never married, or had children. In this painting, Degas&#8217;s father is seen with one of the musicians. It would be the only portrait he made of his father, a central figure in his life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Peletier Opera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which caught fire, was a place much admired by <\/span><b>Degas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some of his paintings were set in spaces of this opera, although the new <\/span><b>Opera Garnier<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was already in operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portrait of Lorenzo Pagans and Auguste de Gas. 1872.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Degas&#8217;s Artwork<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><b>Degas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was a perfectionist. He concentrated on drawing, drawing the lines. By drawing and painting over and over until it was perfect, nothing was random. He was an admirer of the French artist <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who told him when he met him: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Draw lines and more lines, young man, taken from reality and memory so that you can become a good artist. &#8220;.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Degas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made some paintings that he would present at the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paris Salon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but they did not cause much surprise. It would continue like this for other years, none of those works would be historical. With figures cut out as would happen in a photograph. In this famous work by <\/span><b>Degas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swaying Dancer (1879)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we can see how two of the green dancers are cut off. Almost as if the work was done from a photograph.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides that, the angle in which he painted the paintings, always gave the feeling of being just another <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spectator<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><b><i>voyeur <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focused on something specific.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, <\/span><b>Degas\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> artworks used to have lines on the floor. It was a recurring feature. That brought <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perspective <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the artwork.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Degas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used to paint in a studio. He frequented the opera, its rehearsal areas, and hallways. He memorized the scenes and then put them back together in his study. As we can see in his artworks, not all of them were located on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This practice used to be common at that time. Men used to pay to see rehearsals. The dancers used to be from low-income classes, so finding a sponsor to help them was important. The dance was intimately linked to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prostitution<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at that time in <\/span><b>France.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This work \u00a8Ballet Rehearsal on Stage\u00a8 has three versions. This is due to the artist&#8217;s search for perfection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The impressionists<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A group of young artists began to meet in <\/span><b>Paris <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to hold exhibitions of their artworks. Artists who did not exhibit at the <\/span><b>Paris Salon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, due to their <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">innovative <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">style, far from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traditional art<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The performances of the group&#8217;s artists used to cause a scandal. This group was known as <\/span><b>The Impressionists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Impressionists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used to paint outdoors, they painted nature. <\/span><b>Degas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did not find nature interesting, what he was passionate about was the subject of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dancers <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ladies bathing naked<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Furthermore, <\/span><b>the Impressionists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> painted on the stain, that is, they did not exercise the line, the drawing. In this sense, <\/span><b>Degas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was moving away from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impressionism<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He made it very clear that he considered himself more of a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">realist artist<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impressionist<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Degas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">participated in almost all the exhibitions of <\/span><b>the Impressionists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, he did not have a good relationship with the other <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">artists <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the group. <\/span><b>Degas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had a strong personality and used to speak without filters.
