Pablo Picasso<\/b> was a Spanish artist (1881 – 1973), he was a painter and sculptor. Some consider him the best painter of the 20th century. <\/span>Picasso <\/b>is known for creating together with <\/span>Georges Braque<\/b>, the artistic movement <\/span>Cubism<\/b>. However, t<\/span>he term\u00a0 “cubism” was not given by these artists, the French art critic\u00a0Louis Vauxcelles<\/b>, who saw a painting by Braque<\/b> commented with disdain, that they looked like small cubes <\/b>and geometric figures.<\/p>\n

There are at least 16.000 artworks made by <\/span>Picasso<\/b>. But this artist did not only painted artworks in the <\/span>cubist style<\/span><\/i>. He began painting from a very young age. His father was a teacher at art school, he guided him and introduced him to art. He drew expertly from a very early age and stunned adults about how he worked with academic drawings when he was just 7 years old. He had his first art exhibition at the age of 13.<\/span><\/p>\n

Picasso studied at the <\/span>Academia de San Fernando<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Madrid<\/b>, but was a critic of it. He lived most of his life in <\/span>France<\/b>. When the dictatorship of <\/span>Francisco Franco<\/b> began, he fled to <\/span>France<\/b>. Although he could, he never wanted to nationalize as a French citizen because he always hoped that Franco’s dictatorship would end and he would\u00a0 return to <\/span>Spain<\/b>. He died before that happened.<\/span><\/p>\n

Picasso’s artwork<\/b><\/h2>\n

Picasso <\/b>always created paintings inspired by everything he lived, read, and saw. He admired<\/span> Henri Toulouse-Lautrec<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Degas<\/span><\/i>, therefore, some similarities can be seen in Picasso’s work in his early years in Paris with the work of these two artists. <\/span>Picasso <\/b>loved to <\/span>experiment <\/span><\/i>that h<\/span>e was not afraid to work with different materials. He was one of the pioneers in adding <\/span>paper <\/b>to his artworks. For professional artworks at the time, this was considered wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n

Picasso painted about his life, partners, friends, children, pets, the places where he had been. There was a time when he liked going to the <\/span>circus<\/span><\/i>, so he painted several pictures in which acrobats and dancers were central characters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout his life, he worked on\u00a0 female <\/span>nudes<\/span><\/i>. One of his most famous paintings is <\/span>The Young Ladies of Avignon<\/b> from 1907, he is said to have been inspired by <\/span>classical <\/span><\/i>sculptures and <\/span>archaic <\/span><\/i>sculptures. In this paint, <\/span>Picasso <\/b>gives special treatment to the <\/span>forms<\/span><\/i>. At the time, nobody liked the painting, his close friends said that it was not a beautiful artwork.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Guernica<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This is\u00a0 Pablo Picasso’s most famous artwork. This artwork was made in 1937 and is about the bombardment and suffering of the population of Guernica<\/strong> during the Spanish Civil War<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This artwork has many different <\/span>elements<\/span><\/i>. Let’s focus on the characters’ <\/span>eyes<\/b> first. We can see that they are <\/span>exorbitant<\/span><\/i>, looking to different sides, they are showing the deep <\/span>pain <\/span><\/i>caused by <\/span>the bombardment and the <\/span>suffering<\/span><\/i>. The baby, located in the lower-left corner, has no eyes, and this indicates that he is actually dead<\/em>.<\/span> Now, let’s look at the <\/span>hands <\/b>of some of the characters, they are different sizes<\/em> and seem to go in different directions<\/em><\/span>. They transmit <\/span>strength <\/span><\/i>and they seem to suffer<\/em> a lot<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Picasso <\/b>said that the <\/span>bull <\/b>represents <\/span>brutality <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>darkness<\/span><\/i>. It is well known that <\/span>Picasso <\/b>enjoyed <\/span>bullfighting<\/span><\/i>. It is a symbol that he used in many of his artworks. In this work, you can only see the legs and the head of the <\/span>bull<\/b>. His eyes are wild, his face is calm. It\u00a0seems to be the only character on stage who doesn’t suffer.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/h2>\n

Details of Picasso’s life<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Picasso <\/b>was a temperamental and somewhat eccentric artist, but he was undoubtedly a <\/span>genius<\/b>. He did not usually <\/span>sign <\/span><\/i>his paintings, saying that if he did, his paintings could be <\/span>stolen<\/span><\/i>, or <\/span>forged<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He used to be said to be <\/span>selfish<\/span><\/i>, however, there is evidence that there were times when Picasso<\/strong> helped other artists <\/em>a lot<\/span>. As with <\/span>Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/b>,\u00a0 he presented potential buyers several times and helped him gain attention from others. This belief probably comes from the fact that <\/span>Picasso <\/b>did not like to throw anything away, he <\/span>recycled <\/span><\/i>everything, then used them later in his art.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His work <\/span>\u00a8Bull Head\u00a8,<\/b> created from a recycled bicycle (again thematic of the bulls) is well known.<\/span><\/p>\n

Picasso <\/b>was also a <\/span>writer<\/span><\/i>. However, only very few close friends read his writings. <\/span>Picasso <\/b>was very reserved with this part of his life. <\/span>Pablo Picasso<\/b> said that not everything he created was <\/span>good<\/span><\/i>. He was always aware that some of the artworks he created could not provide sufficient quality<\/em><\/span>. He was especially critical of his sculptures<\/em>, a lot of what he\u00a0 didn’t seem nice to him.<\/span><\/p>\n
