Banksy <\/span><\/i>is the stage name or <\/span>pseudonym <\/span><\/i>for the British street artist. Its origin is known since it began to develop its work in <\/span>Bristol<\/b>. He started doing <\/span>graffiti <\/span><\/i>in the 1980s. He was born in 1974 in <\/span>Gloucestershire<\/b>, <\/span>England<\/b>. Very little personal data is known about Banksy. He has remained anonymous since his work is <\/span>illegal<\/span><\/i>, and he can be arrested for <\/span>crimes<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Around <\/span>Banksy\u2019s <\/span><\/i>figure, there is always a <\/span>halo <\/b>of <\/span>mystery<\/span><\/i>. In 2010, <\/span>Banksy <\/span><\/i>directed a <\/span>documentary<\/b>, for a few minutes he appears in it, but does not show his face. He usually wears a sweater with a cap to avoid showing off. This documentary called <\/span>\u00a8Exit Through The Gift Shop\u00a8<\/b>\u00a0was nominated for the <\/span>Oscars <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Bafta Awards<\/span><\/i>. This documentary was premiered at the <\/span>Sundance Film Festival<\/b>, in<\/span> Utah USA<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Banksy and His Identity<\/b><\/h1>\n

Due to his hidden identity, there are some hypotheses of who <\/span>Banksy <\/span><\/i>may really be. These hypotheses range from a <\/span>graffiti artist <\/span><\/i>to a member of an <\/span>English music band<\/span><\/i>. A study carried out by the<\/span> Queen Mary University of London<\/b> in 2016 sought to reveal the true identity of the street artist.<\/span><\/p>\n

They used a program designed to discover the identity of <\/span>terrorists<\/b>. The places where <\/span>Banksy <\/span><\/i>usually appears were studied, and what nearby places there were, such as pubs, shops, etc. In this case, the study claims that the real <\/span>Banksy <\/span><\/i>is <\/span>Robin Gunningham<\/b>. <\/span>Gunningham <\/span><\/i>is a graffiti artist in <\/span>Bristol<\/b>, he’s <\/span>Banksy’s <\/span><\/i>age, and he was already one of the suspects in being this character. There has been no confirmation from <\/span>Banksy <\/span><\/i>of his true identity. Speculation and hypotheses will follow.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, <\/span>Banksy <\/span><\/i>has a verified <\/span>Instagram <\/b>account. So somehow Instagram, had to have <\/span>verified the identity of Banksy<\/em>,<\/b> to give him his blue<\/strong> mark. <\/span>Banksy <\/span><\/i>is also known to have charged for jobs, and this money has been transferred to accounts in his name. So, there really is a way to find out his <\/span>identity<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

But regardless of who <\/span>Banksy <\/span><\/i>really is, the fact that his identity is unknown creates a <\/span>mystery <\/b>around his figure. Consequently, his work is <\/span>more <\/b>valued, creates more curiosity in his fans and in the media. It seems that beyond what is <\/span>legal <\/b>there is another reason to remain anonymous. We will see what happens with this character.<\/span><\/p>\n

Banksy and His Art<\/b><\/h1>\n

Banksy’s<\/span><\/i> art is simple and uncomplicated. <\/span>Stencils <\/b>that are then painted with <\/span>aerosols<\/b>. Almost anyone could do this type of <\/span>graffiti<\/b>. Walls and places seem to be chosen carefully. The <\/span>messages <\/b>are usually political and critical of society. It takes well-known images from <\/span>pop culture<\/b> and adapts them to the message it wants to convey.<\/span><\/p>\n

Banksy<\/span><\/i> is said to be <\/span>anti-establishment<\/b>, as he uses public and open spaces without asking permission, and transmits messages that are <\/span>critical <\/b>of the system, <\/span>racism<\/b>, and world <\/span>politics<\/b>. <\/span>Banksy’s <\/span><\/i>works are usually reproduced later on paper and in all kinds of materials that are used for sale. Bomb Hugger<\/b><\/h2>\n

Graffiti made in 2003 by <\/span>Banksy<\/span><\/i>. It shows a girl hugging a bomb. Made in <\/span>Germany<\/b>, this work is a critique of war and the innocents left in the middle. This simple work was auctioned at <\/span>Sotheby’s <\/b>for \u00a3 31,200.<\/span><\/p>\n
