How to Create an Altar for the Goddess Aphrodite

How to Create an Altar for the Goddess Aphrodite

A few days ago I wrote about the goddess Aphrodite (link is at the end of the article) and how many people still to this day honor and pray to her (me included!). So, I also want to share how to create a very beautiful and special little altar dedicated to her. It doesn’t have to include really expensive items and it doesn’t have to be hard to find them.

The beautiful thing about this is that you can make your own unique altar, with the specific items that are special to you and that you feel like they connect you to Aphrodite’s energy. So take this guide as a stepping stone to create the one that’s unique for you!

Materials

Historically speaking, there are some common symbols and items that most ancient people related to the Goddess Aphrodite. The most known things were:

  • Animals: doves, dolphins, seashells, and swans.
  • Flowers: roses and myrtle.
  • Things: sparrows, girdles, and mirrors.

You can definitely add more items, like mentioned before, choose the things that personally connect you to the Goddess herself. Here are some more examples of things you can add:

  • Little statues/Photos: You can’t forget to add a mini representation of the goddess where you can see her image and body. You can use a little statue (there are some not very expensive and you can find them online very easily) or a picture of her paintings done by famous painters, for example, “The Birth of Venus” by Sandro Botticelli.
  • Jewelry: pearl necklaces or earrings; jewelry items that show the representing symbols of Aphrodite (like a necklace with a dolphin pendant), etc.
  • Perfumes: rose water, rose-scented perfumes, lavender-scented perfumes, etc.
  • Make-Up: If you have empty makeup packages, you can use those too; like a lipstick container, maybe some powder foundation with a mirror; all of these can be used as decoration. Let’s not forget that Aphrodite is the goddess of beauty.
  • Fake plants:  If you want to keep the altar looking “fresh” all the time, I recommend using fake flowers. These will never wither.
  • Food: You can also add some fruit (make sure to eat it or clean the altar before it goes bad). Apples, cherries, strawberries, honey, cinnamon, plant-based milk, etc. This would represent the sweetness and fruitfulness of the goddess.
  • Combs: You can also add your hair comb to it, Aphrodite loves to groom herself and comb her hair.
  • Anything that reminds you of her!

Ambient

For you to be able to connect with your inner goddess, the atmosphere of the place that you decide to put your altar on has to be special to you and has to allow you to be calm, centered, and at peace. To enforce this, you can also add:

  • Incense: You can choose the rose and cinnamon scented ones.
  • Music: When it is your time to pray and meditate in front of your altar, don’t forget to add some beautiful music to make it all so much more magical.
  • Candles: Of course you can’t forget to add some beautiful and sweet-scented candles. Rose scented, cotton-candy scented, cinnamon and honey, whatever it is that you like. It is better if you pick them red, pink, or white-colored.
  • Prayers: Sing beautiful mantras and beautiful words to celebrate the goddess and her representation in you. Poems about beauty, nature, and harmony will work best.

Putting the Altar Together

This is the part that is really all up to you and how you find it best; there is no particular or specific order to it. Most Aphrodite altars position her picture or mini statue at the center or top of the altar, then all of the items lay at her feet; around her.

You could also create different levels to it with several “stairs” and in each step, you put the different decorations and items. Let me know what you think in the comments and if you have some other interesting ideas on what to put on your altar. Would you be interested in creating one?
