Chungking Express-Real love

The movie and the director

“Hong-Kong Express” (for our Italian readers) is a 1994 movie written and directed by Wong Kar Wai. He will become famous in 2000, when his masterpiece “In the mood for love” will be recognized as a great film all over the world.

The plot

The movie is about two love stories where the male main characters are policemen.

In the first, we meet He-Qiwu, a young cop who has been recently dumped by his girlfriend. He needs love, he is looking for it in every place. But the feelings for his-ex girlfriend stop him from finding love again. One day, he meets a lady in a blonde wig. He immediately falls in love with her, ignoring that she is a criminal. This magic love at first sight will not last forever and He-Qiwu will be again alone eating some snacks at a fast-food, where the second story starts.

Now, we have Faye, the new beautiful employee who falls for another policeman, Cop 663. Cop 663 has recently broken up with his girlfriend: a very beautiful hostess. Thus, he can’t find it in other girls. He is still in love with his ex. Faye will not give up and find a way to make him fall in love with her. Will she find a way to make her dream to live in California come true?

Why you should watch this movie

This is a very romantic movie where the Asian philosophy meets the metropolitan culture, giving birth to two stories of real love. Here, love is a real force of nature that can change the way people perceive time, colors, and reality. The greatness of Wong Kar-Way as a director is very clear, he has been capable of coordinating every aspect of the production,  screenplay, photography, editing, sound engineering, costumes, and acting to create a world in the world. In the movie, the world of love is real, we can see and touch it. We just need to decide to live in it. This world is inside the real world, so it’s not so hard to find.
