The Art Of Film Making

As all of us know, film is an art. It’s an absolutely magical process creating movies. I am going to write about the essence of filmmaking, from the very beginning till the final process. In its entirety, it’s an engaging but complex process, from the script till the last visual output. 

In essence, the script is the base for the whole film. If we have a good story with great content to be created, it will surely turn out to be a worthy and compelling film. Personally, I believe that a good script needs suitable casting for the actors as well as the crew, only then can a magical movie be created. I am big fan of thriller movies in which the audience sits on edge, eager to find out about the upcoming scenes. The twists and turns are really important in these types of movies. 

While making a movie, each of the departments should focus on their functions and crew members should perform tasks within their own field only.  The producer is the individual ultimately in charge of the decision-making processes for the film’s budgeting. The writer and director may be or may not be the same person for a particular film. It totally depends on a number of different aspects of the film itself. The art director plays a major role in the filmmaking process, as this position is responsible for the production design. 

Now, to briefly introduce and discuss the different departments. The key creative team consists of the director, producer and screenwriter. As for the remaining departments, we have the production department which is in charge of looking in to the budget and expenditure, as well as delimiting the film’s spending accordingly. There also exists other functions including assistant directors, script supervisors and stunt coordinators.

 Another major department is the script-writing group, which is a strong part of the movie–making dynamic. The script writers work with the director and actors simultaneously to brief them about all details and notices concerning the scenes shots of the movie. Films are so remarkably unique that the location in which its shot is crucial. The location department is responsible for selecting the ultimate place to shoot. They must scout for different locations that match the storyline as well as the characters of the film. 

Visuals can be deceiving, and in order to select and shoot perfect scenes the cinematography/camera department is in charge of shooting the scenes, organizing the lighting and all other visual-related issues. It is a big department in charge of shooting the entire film. Along with the visual there is always the complimentary hearing experience, and sound is integral in setting a particular mood compatible with the story. The sound department is in control of managing the scenes in line with audio. As in most of the movies BGM and songs play a crucial part for the narration of the story. Sound travels in a beautiful manner, and has the potential to frame the movie emotionally. 

Another integral component is what the characters wear, as this makes a great impact on the personalities they reflect. As part of the process of film–making, there is a department responsible for the costumes which suits the storyline and characterization of the narrative. Combining all these departments, from the script till production is part of the film production stage.

At this point, the film would completed production and then shifts to the post-production phase preparing for the final output. In this part, the co-pilot, being the editor comes in. He/she is the person who can change the film, shifting it to their own perspective and style. In a way, this department has a huge role in bringing out the final output as per the proper script as well as the director’s’ point of view, which should be matched together. Therefore, for a good film to be produced, all aspects should work in favour of the grander process.
