SCUBA 101: Our Underwater Friends

We’re learning a lot of new things about underwater. As a diver, the best feeling we have is to be a guest underwater. We owe this mostly to the wonderful underwater life and ecosystem that greets us with love. Our friends we meet in this beautiful world have different stories. It’s all-important and precious. Let’s get to know our friends a little better.

Stingray Fish

Stingrays have eyes that are located above their flat bodies, while their mouths and gills are located below. They inhale and exhale through advanced holes behind their eyes. Water enters through these openings and exits through the gills beneath the skin. Each stingray has its own hunting strategy. Stingrays eat worms, oysters, and shrimp that live on the ocean floor. Freshwater stingrays vary by region, but they frequently eat insects. During the dive, these friends can greet you by gliding past you.

Loggerhead Sea Turtles

The Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean Sea, are all home to the loggerhead sea turtle. Females come ashore to lay eggs and spend the majority of their lives in saltwater and estuarine habitats. Female loggerhead sea turtles have a low reproductive rate, lay an average of four egg clutches before going inactive for two to three years. Baby turtles start to live alone, but the knowledge they have to do is furnished by nature. However, reaching the sea is insufficient for survival. Only one turtle in every 1000 is capable of reaching puberty. Sea turtles are one of our loveliest friends you can encounter underwater. You might even think it’s smiling at you.

Lionfish

Lionfishes cause harm to humans. They live near the coast and in water depths of up to 50 meters. Adults can grow to be up to 40 cm long. They have pectoral fins that look like propellers above and below their eyes and mouths. Burning, sweating, and breathing difficulties may occur for several days as a result of contact with human needles located in the upper body, and this may even result in death. However, we must keep in mind that no living creature is harmful unless we approach and harm it. In any case, one of our golden rules is to collect beautiful memories and finish the dive without touching or even seeing any living thing.

Octopus

Octopuses can be found in the ocean’s various layers, including coral reefs, the pelagic zone, and the seabed. Some of them can be found in the abyssal zone, while others can be found in the tidal zone. After mating, the male octopus dies as a result of cell aging. After laying the fertilized eggs in a bucket, the female octopus waits until the eggs crack before dying. Squeezing ink, using camouflage and threatening behavior, as well as their ability to move quickly in water and hide, are all strategies octopuses use to protect themselves from predators. Although all octopuses are poisonous, only blue-ringed octopuses are capable of killing humans. It’s also quite fascinating to watch them float in the blue waters.

Mediterranean Moray

The Mediterranean morays’ bodies are elongated and eel-like and can grow to be 1.5 meters long and weigh over 15 kilograms. They have dark grey to dark brown coloration with fine dark spots, and the skins are slimy and scale-free. Humans are at risk with their bites. Their jaws are powerful. The jaw locks and does not open when a Mediterranean moray bites. However, unless it perceives a threat, it will not approach you. Their heads are usually seen emerging from a hole; they rarely swim into open water.
