A Quick Trip to Iceland

Iceland… where ice and fire are blended together, nature and architecture are the most harmonious country. Everyone always says they want to see Iceland, but I don’t know if this will happen to everyone. When it happened to me, this crazy idea came to our mind while drinking our coffee with my friend on a cold Amsterdam night.

My friend told me “why should we go back to the country without seeing the northern lights?” And when I replied, “Really, why”, it took 15 days to buy the ticket and prepare for the journey. At that time, when I was a student in Poland, everything seemed accessible to me and I made everything accessible. We arrived at Katowice Airport on a cold 25 January. I was still not sure where to go. Iceland was a planet for me and I was going there. We were broke and a little helpless. It all depended on our CouchSurfing host that would host us. He had promised to host us with two cartons of cigarettes and 3 liters of vodka, and we spent our last money on it. Going to Iceland with a backpack and vodka bottles was, as you may appreciate, unreasonable. We made our landing in Iceland after a long 6-hour flight.

Our host promised us that we would have a wonderful Iceland trip because we were full, and at the same time we went to the point where North America and Europe separated, and suddenly my eyes were on the Northern Lights. We set off for warm thermal waters with the adrenaline of cold weather and a sense of curiosity.

Sulfur smells and water vapor was rising from everywhere. 6 people entered the thermal waters in the dark of the night, challenged the cold air, and dispersed into our house. I spent the night in the car of a woman I never knew, talking about our life and future plans. The next day we left the car by entrusting me.

Even the idea of driving in Iceland was great for me, I am a car lover. We went to the place where David Guetta and Sia’s video clip “The Wolf” was filmed and closed the day with Iceland coffee. When we got home, there were new guests and they invited us to watch the Northern Lights, so we headed to the cold and run into the cars, grabbing our cameras. We waited somewhere in the south of Iceland. That must have been waiting for the miracle.

It was a wonderful feeling to be able to share this moment with people I never knew except my friend, and suddenly the miracle came true. Green halos were coming and going right above our heads and we were watching in crying. Moreover, he even had a voice. We were so enchanted that we almost forgot to take pictures.

Iceland gave us a great welcome gift. With the magical drunkenness of that night, we went to the Vik area the next day and headed for the Black Beaches where the famous TV Series Game of Thrones was filmed. We had the opportunity to see active volcanoes and many waterfalls along the way, for example, Skogafoss waterfall. After an extremely tiring day and the sunset on the Atlantic Ocean, we ended the day in Vik village.

The first place the Vikings landed on earth, this village could have been one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Thanking God for these opportunities, I left the village, and the next day we went out to visit the second-hand shops in Iceland and the capital city of Reykjavik. We said goodbye to Iceland at midnight, believing that God bestowed all her skills in Iceland and being grateful for everything we met.
