UNKNOWN PANDEMIC DISASTER: FEMICIDE

THE GREATEST ILLNESS OF OUR AGE; VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, FEMICIDE

Femicide or feminicide is a sex-based hate crime term, broadly defined as “the intentional killing of women or girls because they are female.” However, definitions vary depending on their cultural context.

The entire world deals with a pandemic disaster, Coronavirus, but women do not only deal with this disaster but also have to fight for themselves. Women are forced to change, forced to be married (even if they are not 18), or are exposed to be physical or sexual violence.

To illustrate:

Thousands of women across the Republic of Turkey protested on Wednesday, demanding that the government not withdraw from an international treaty that prevents domestic violence. The Istanbul Convention is the world’s first binding instrument to prevent and combat violence against women, from marital rape to female genital mutilation. There were also protests in Ankara, Izmir, and in the southern cities of Adana and Antalya.

In recent years, women’s rights groups have accused authorities of failing to implement law 6284. This was created following Turkey’s ratification of the treaty in 2012 — leaving women vulnerable to violence often by their partners, husbands, or relatives.

Rights group “We Will Stop Femicide Platform,” says 146 women were killed by men in the first half of 2020.

The group says 474 women were killed last year, while the figure was 180 in 2010.

Poland’s abortion ban: President Andrzej Duda appears to backtrack after a week of protests (This is the headline about the abortion in Poland)

According to its first biennial US safety report published on Thursday, Uber received over 3,000 reports of sexual assault during 2018. (This is from the USA).

(New abortion laws prompt thousands of Americans to protest across the country)

There are so many examples of violence: If you are a woman, you might be exposed to violence from your intimate partner. Most likely, the one who uses the violence against you , is close to you. It could be your father, your brother, or your boyfriend, it could even be your husband. But most of the women are questioning “how I can get stop all of these things?”.
First, everyone has a role to play. You may not be able to overcome it alone, but don’t forget that there is strength in numbers.
Then we need a global collective effort to stop it. For instance, most of the European countries (including Turkey), have to sign the Istanbul Convention.
Don’t forget, no one cannot be superior to you about gender equality!
And, finally, you don’t need to anyone’s support (especially a man’s support for anything). You can achieve whatever you want to.
